The hugely popular Clipper Logistics Racing Personality Show Jumping Competition is set to return to the 32Newmarket Open Weekend on Sunday 17th September. The competition will see British flat racing’s biggest names make the journey back from a Classic clash at Doncaster the previous day, to tackle fences for one afternoon at the Open Weekend’s newly located arena on the Severals.
The competition will challenge the most accomplished of horsemen and women, with double points awarded for those brave enough to take on the ultimate ‘Joker’ fence, and clear the rest of the course in the fastest time. A daunting task for our newcomers to the competition!
Jockeys James Doyle, Silvestre de Sousa, and Josephine Gordon are no strangers to success on the racetrack but have yet to test their skills in the Open Weekend arena, whilst ITV’s Francesca Cumani has agreed to leave her microphone at home for the day and make her debut round count against the jockeys. Rebel Racing’s Richard Spencer will also make his first appearance in the competition and represent Newmarket’s trainers.
Returning competitors Frankie Dettori (Captain), Roger Varian(Captain), Hayley Turner, Adam Kirby, Jamie Spencer, and Andrea Atzeni will also be included in the stellar line- up of riders hoping to knock reigning champion Pat Cosgrave off the top spot on the podium as the competitive spirit from the track spills into the arena.
Josephine Gordon, first-time competitor, commented; “It is always a highlight of the weekend and I am looking forward to taking part in the competition this year. The jockeys may have the advantage, but every pole counts and we’ll need to be careful that a trainer doesn’t sneak in with a nice and steady clear.”
Francesca Cumani won’t be the only ITV star to be seen on Sunday afternoon at the Severals. Oli Bell will be hoping to reverse the form on last year’s NASS Stable Staff vs Martin Collins jockeys & trainers football match. The newly appointed captain returns to the pitch, after the football retirement of previous captain Roger Varian. A penalty shootout secured the win for the stable staff last year and Oli will be relying on Newmarket’s own Jo Hart in goals, Charlie Fellowes, plus the quick feet of jockey Ryan Tate up front in the field, alongside his other team mates.
Early bird tickets cost £18pp for the full weekend, or £13pp for Sunday only, and can be purchased online, at the National Heritage Centre, and at the Jockey Club Estates office in Newmarket. Tickets can also be purchased on the day from any of the equine sites open (£5pp for Saturday only and £15pp for Sunday only). Kids U18 go FREE all weekend. Charlie has had an incredibly successful season to date this year, including four wins at the July Meeting in Newmarket. More trainers’ yards opening for the Newmarket Open Weekend soon to be announced – watch this space!
BackNewmarket trainers Charlie Appleby, John Gosden, Saeed Bin Suroor, Michael Bell, David Simcock, James Fanshawe and Richard Spencer all tasted success at this year’s Royal meeting. A win at Royal Ascot is no easy feat but these trainers ensured that British racing’s HQ was well represented in the famous winners enclosure.
John Gosden’s Stradivarius stayed on the best to win under Andrea Atzeni in the Queen’s Vase, whilst Coronet proved best of his runners in the Group 2 Ribblesdale. David Simcock took home one of the big handicaps of the week with Bless Him, best of 29 runners in the Brittania. Bless Him was raced on the far side by winning jockey and NOW show jumping competitor Jamie Spencer. Whist Richard Spencer’s impressive 2 year-old Rajasinghe stole the Coventry Stakes on day one for Rebel Racing.
The boys in blue were in full force during the week. Charlie Appleby and Saeed Bin Suroor both brought to the meeting an impressive string of horses for Godolphin. Success was tasted by Sound and Silence, trained by Charlie, in the Windsor Castle on the first day and followed up with Rare Rythem in the Duke of Edinburgh later in the week. Whist Saeed also delivered another Godolphin winner with Benbatl in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes. A first winner at Royal Ascot for Benbatl’s winning jockey Oisin Murphy and 6 wins in total for Godolphin at this year’s Royal Ascot.
Two of the week’s outstanding performances came from two of Newmarket’s most popular equine stars – Big Orange and The Tin Man. Big Orange made all from start to finish to triumph in the Gold Cup, Royal Ascot’s most prestigious race, in front of a rapturous crowd. Michael Bell’s loveable stayer held on to beat last year’s winner Order of St George by a short head under a superb ride from James Doyle, much to the delight of the whole Bell family.
The Tin Man had already tasted Group 1 glory at Ascot at Champions Day last year and was returning to the course in good form for the highly competitive Diamond Jubilee Stakes. After a thrilling finish a stewards enquiry left the whole course on the edge of their seats, but much to the relief and delight to his owners and trainer, James Fanshawe, the placings remained unchanged and confirmed his horse as the winner.
Many of the trainer’s yards will open during the 2017 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend, giving visitors the unique opportunity to get up and close to these fantastic horses, speak to their trainers and meet all the very hard-working lad and lasses who care for them. The yards will open on Sunday 17 September only, from 9am to 12:30pm. A full list of trainers opening is soon to be announced so please keep an eye on our website for updates. Early bird tickets to the 32Red Newmarket Open Weekend cost £16pp and all Under18 years go FREE.
BackThe British Racing School was established in 1983. It is owned by a charitable trust and therefore any income generated is reinvested back into the school. The original aim of the school was to provide purpose built facilities to promote and encourage young people who had the potential to ride as professional jockeys. But now the school has expanded providing a whole range of different courses and training.
It costs about 3 million a year to run the school and the majority of income, to meet the running costs, comes from Government funding via the Skills Funding Agency and the Education Funding Agency. As well as this this it is topped up with industry funding based on the number of trainees they place in jobs.
The school features many world class training facilities such as a two and a half furlong Activtrack gallop, an Indoor school and classrooms with state of the art technology and many others. As well as this they have a dedicated and well qualified staff and an array of ex racehorses with their own personality and purpose.
The British Racing school is opening its doors again this year for the Newmarket Open Weekend. It is open on the Saturday the 16th of September from 9am to 4pm. In addition, there are many other things going on this weekend that you can enjoy such as the NOW food & drink festival, a tour round the National Heritage Centre museum and National Stud tours and many other fun things for you avid racing fans.
Have a look to see what they do..
