Question Time! with Charlie Appleby

Charlie Appleby was appointed as a Godolphin trainer in July, 2013, after 15 years working for Godolphin as a travelling head lad, stable head lad and assistant trainer. 

Charlie divides his year between Marmoom stables in Dubai and Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket.                         

1. How and when did you come to Newmarket?

I came to Newmarket at the age of 16 and joined Susan Piggott.  I then began working for David Loder at 18 and commenced training for Godolphin in 2013.

2.       All-time favourite racehorse?

Dubai Millennium – I was with David Loder when he was a 2-year-old before he joined Saeed bin Suroor’s stable and he was an exceptional horse.

3.       If you could swap jobs for one day what would you do?

I would love to spend a day working with a top class chef

4.       What is your hobby outside of racing?

I enjoy a game of golf when I get some spare time

5.       What is the highlight/best thing about the Newmarket Open Weekend?

It is a great opportunity for racing fans and enthusiasts to see the wonderful facilities in Newmarket and the top class equine athletes

6.       What is Newmarket’s hidden gem in your opinion?

The drive into Newmarket is fascinating.  The scenery of the stud farms and training grounds as well as the two great racecourses next to each other is unique to any other part of the world.

7.       What is your favourite moment of a racecourse?

Outstrip winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.  Santa Anita is a fantastic racetrack with the backdrop of the mountains and it was a surreal experience

8.       What is the biggest challenge facing racing?

Encouraging young, talented people to join the industry

9.       What are you most looking forward to in the flat season?

Watching the 2-year-old’s progress towards Dubai Future Champions Festival

10.   What is your favourite ice-cream flavour?

Vanilla
